Africa's telecommunications industry has expanded rapidly in recent years, driven primarily by the mobile services segment. The number of mobile cellular subscribers in Africa more than doubled over the past decade rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.5% in the 2013-2023 period, according to data from International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as found in the World Bank Development Indicators database. The data shows that in 2023, the total number of mobile cellular subscriptions in Africa reached 1.1bn, down 15% compared to the previous year. In 2023, Africa accounted for an estimated 12% of global mobile cellular subscriptions, ranking the continent second behind the Asia-Pacific region, which accounted for 56% of total users. The decline in mobile cellular subscriptions in 2023 in Africa can be explain by the global cost of living crisis, underpinned by elevated inflation and high interest rates, which had an adverse impact on consumer spending and in turn demand for telecommunication products and services.
