In Q1 2023, sales of new motor vehicles in Brazil stood at 471,775 units, decreasing by 21.61% q/q and increasing by 16.3% y/y. Passenger cars was the largest segment with a market share of 73.3% in Q1 2023, followed by light commercial vehicles and heavy vehicles with shares of 19.28% and 7.38%, respectively. As the Brazilian economy recovered from the negative effects of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, the domestic demand for motor vehicles entered a recovery in 2022, yet in Q1 2023 it cooled down because of persistent high costs of financing. Domestic passenger cars sales in Q1 2023 declined by 24.75% q/q and by 15.12% y/y, reaching the amount of 346,000 units. Light commercial vehicle sales also declined to 90,947 units, decreasing by 11.79% q/q, however, sales expanded up by 21.34% compared to Q1 2022. Heavy vehicle sales also recorded a decreased in Q1 2023 (34,835 units). They declined by 10.53% compared to Q4 2022, with a increase of 15.45% compared to Q1 2023.
