In 2022, retail sales in Brazil rose by 1% y/y in volume terms, a relatively weak performance compared to the solid overall performance of the domestic economy, with GDP up by 2.9% y/y in real terms. Some of the sub-segments that achieved solid rebounds in 2021, such as retail sales of construction materials and apparel (clothing), slumped in 2022 due to a lack of sustaining factors, with still-strong price increases in these segments hindering sales. Other sub-segments that had a weak 2021 continued in negative territory during 2022, with the main example being furniture retail. Therefore, growth in the sector was largely driven by the fuels category, which benefited from multiple tax breaks granted by the government during the year and registered double-digit growth in both volume and value terms. In value terms, retail sales were positive for the year for all key categories, with an average increase of 14.2% y/y in 2022, according to IBGE's retail trade index.
