According to the Monthly Survey of Trade by Brazil's Statistics Office (IBGE), retail sales in Brazil increased by 2.4% y/y in volume terms in Q1 2023. Although the domestic economy did well in terms of overall economic activity, with GDP expanding by 4% y/y during the quarter, the retail sector was not among the main drivers of growth, with the strong performance mostly being driven by other sectors (e.g., agriculture). The value added of wholesale and retail trade grew by just 1.6% y/y in Q1 2023, a marked deceleration compared to the 2.1% y/y growth in Q4 2022. High nominal interest rates are a main constraint for retail sales, with the SELIC benchmark rate remaining above 13% pa during the entire Q1 2023, despite the sharp deceleration of inflation. The central bank retained a hawkish stance on the grounds of still unanchored inflation expectations.
