In 2022, the Brazilian mining sector experienced modest growth of 0.2% y/y, achieving an output of 925.4mn tonnes, according to the National Mining Agency (ANM). Production was divided into 50.5% non-metallic minerals and 49% metallic minerals. While this growth was lower than the significant increases seen in 2020 and 2021 (up 4.5% y/y and 10.4% y/y, respectively), challenges in 2022 included increased imports, particularly in fertilisers, and reduced demand from China, a key buyer of Brazilian iron ore. Iron ore, the primary product of the Brazil mining sector, experienced a 4.5% y/y decline in production to 411.7mn tonnes. Rocks and gravel demonstrated an 8.6% y/y increase in production, totalling 253.8mn tonnes, boosted by the recovery of the local and national construction industry. Conversely, fuel mineral production saw a notable 6.7% y/y decrease in 2022, reaching 7mn tonnes. Gems and diamonds mining, however, had a positive performance with a 40% increase in volume, totalling 0.6 tonnes. Despite a 26% y/y decline in overall net sales value to BRL 238.6bn, the figures in 2022 surpassed those of 2020. The majority of the net sales value (88%) was attributed to metallic minerals, with iron ore holding the highest net sales value at BRL 155.5bn, despite a 36.4% drop from 2021. The mining sector's resilience significantly contributed to Brazil's economic landscape, playing a crucial role in employment and economic growth.
