In 2024, the Brazilian mining sector recorded a 4% y/y increase in production, reaching a record-high volume of 1,025.6mn tonnes - the highest level ever registered in the historical series, according to data from the National Mining Agency (ANM). Non-metallic minerals accounted for a slight majority of output at 50.6%, closely followed by metallic minerals at 48.7%. This solid growth was chiefly driven by increased activity in the steel sector, which boosted demand for key inputs such as iron ore, coal, and coke. Sustained external demand, particularly from China - Brazil's principal iron ore export market - further supported rising production volumes. Iron ore remained the dominant mineral, with production expanding by 4.5% y/y to 458.8mn tonnes in 2024. This growth was underpinned, not only by strong global steel demand, but also by logistical improvements and expanded mining capacity, allowing Brazil to capitalise on rising commodity prices despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties. The next largest contributor by volume was rocks and gravel, which rose by 5.7% y/y to 297.1mn tonnes, buoyed by a recovery in the construction sector. Accelerated public infrastructure projects, urban housing developments, and private commercial construction all contributed to increased demand for aggregates and crushed stone, which are essential raw materials for concrete and roadworks.
