China Automotive Sector Report 2017 4th Quarter

The third quarter of 2017 recorded a stable growth in the sales and output of motor vehicles, a more intense competition between major players, leading to lower prices and profit declines y/y. Imports grew faster compared to exports, showing a growth momentum for the domestic market. The number of M&A deals reached 36 in Q3 2017, but dropped significantly in the last quarter of the year. The production of motor vehicles reached 26mn units in the first 11 months of 2017, up 3.9% y/y. The output of passenger cars was 25.22mn units, up 2.2% y/y, while commercial vehicles marked a 15% y/y growth in output, with 3.78mn units produced in the same period. Among passenger cars, SUVs had a 14% y/y growth in production to 9.16mn units in January-November 2017, while all other segments suffered y/y declines, with cross-country vehicles marking an output decrease of nearly 20% y/y to 484,353 units.
