In 2017, China’s automotive sector showed signs of entering a maturity phase. The output and sales declined in the last quarter and large deals took place towards the end of the year, showing further sector restructuring and consolidation. At the same time, car makers still invest in new outlets and production facilities, and continue launching new models to remain competitive. The number of M&A deals in the automotive sector in Q4 of 2017 was 25, less than that in Q3, but their value was higher. Deals in the first half of Q1 2018 already surpassed the total value of deals in Q3 2017. Market growth suffered after the cancellation of tax breaks on smaller-engine cars since 2017. The last quarter of 2017 saw y/y declines in the sales and output of passenger cars by 1.6% and 0.6% y/y, respectively. The commercial vehicle segment continued to grow in Q4 2017, although growth slowed down y/y. Output rose by 8.6% y/y and sales increased by 4.2%.
