The first quarter of 2018 started with significant trade tensions between the US and China, with president Trump increasing import tariffs for steel and aluminium from China and then asking for a USD 100bn cut in the trade surplus with China from June 2018 to May 2019. As a response to the initiated trade war, in end-March 2018 China announced decreases in vehicle import tariffs and plans to phase out the limits on foreign ownership of local production joint ventures by 2022. These new government plans came after a quarter of slower y/y growth in both exports and imports, and a relatively well performing domestic market. Sales of motor vehicles reached 7.18mn units in Q1 2018, up 2.6% y/y, while output declined by 1.6% y/y in the same period to 7mn units. Imports reached 275,680 vehicles in the first three months of 2018, up 6% y/y, and exports rose 21.9% y/y in the same period to 231,638 units. Sedans and 4WD cross-country cars saw a 40% y/y growth in the exports, while
imports of 4WD cross-country cars even declined by 12.4% y/y in Q1 2018. Sales were strong for SUVs, reaching 2.7mn units in Q1 2018, up 11.3% y/y. The commercial segment marked stable growth of 2.7% for sales of trucks and 2% for sales of buses. Double digit growth of new light vehicle sales in the period shows that the market has recovered from the cancellation of tax incentives introduced a year ago, in January 2017.
