China’s retail sector continued to expand in Q1 2018, driven by strong domestic consumption which contributed 77.8% to the country’s economic growth in the period, compared to its 77.2% share in Q1 2017. High consumption was largely a result of rising incomes, with the average disposable income per capita increasing by 6.6% y/y to RMB 7,815 in Q1 2018. Retail sales of consumer goods reached RMB 9,028bn in Q1 2018, recording a 5.2% y/y growth. Online retail generated RMB 1,932bn in sales of consumer goods and services, up 37.5% y/y, with sales of consumer goods alone going up by 36.6% y/y to RMB 1,457bn. The quarter was characterised by the continued efforts of online sellers to diversify into offline retail and by an increased number of M&A deals. In April 2018, Alibaba acquired full control of China’s major online platform for food delivery and services Ele.me and said it will invest an additional USD 2bn in the Lazada retail platform. Tencent and JD.com invested USD 140mn and USD 117mn, respectively, to buy minority stakes in Chinese retail chain Better Life Commercial Chain Share. Seeking to grow their market presence, Tencent and Alibaba partnered with conventional retailers, providing them with internet-enabled services and technology-intense retail solutions.
