China Iron and Steel Sector Report 2018 2nd Quarter

In the first quarter of 2017 the revenue of China’s ferrous metal smelting and pressing sector went down by 15.2% y/y to RMB 1.4bn as a result of the drop in the production and sales volumes of steel products. On the one hand, this was caused by the scheduled production cuts of the heavypolluting steel plants in Northern China from November 15, 2017 to March 15, 2018, while on the other hand the demand for steel products was weakening. § The total profit of the ferrous metal smelting and pressing sector continued to show positive results, marking an increase of 21.5% y/y in Q1 2018, reaching RMB 79.8mn. Although the steel prices started to weaken in the first quarter of 2018, they were still higher compared to those in the same period of 2017.
