India is the world's third-largest producer and consumer of electricity. On a per capita basis, as per CEA, the electricity consumption stood at 1,255KWh in FY2022, which is approximately 1/3rd the global average. As the economy grows, electricity demand is bound to rise, which will narrow this gap. According to CEA, electricity demand grew by 9.5% y/y to 1504.3bn units in FY2023, a decade high, compared to 8.1% y/y growth in FY2022. The total installed capacity in FY2023 stood at 416.1GW, with fossil fuels having a share of 57.0%, renewable energy sources (RES) hydropower included, having a share of 41.4% and nuclear energy having a share of 1.6%. There is a concerted effort by the government to transition to clean energy sources to achieve the goal of a non-fossil-based installed capacity of ~500GW by the year FY2030.
