Agriculture is one of the backbones of Indonesia's economy, contributing approximately 13% to the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The sector provided income for 40.8mn people in 2024, or the equivalent of 28% of the total workforce. Agricultural production is concentrated in small farms, which are inefficient and unable to respond adequately to rising domestic demand. As a result, there are plenty of opportunities for land consolidation and investment in mechanisation and digital solutions. The country has vast reserves of untapped land, as well as a mild climate that favours the production of rice, palm oil, coffee, cocoa and fisheries. Indonesia is the world's number one palm oil producer, accounting for almost 60% of global output. The country also ranks second in terms of rubber and fourth by rice production. Although the government has long pushed for self-sufficiency in the production of key agriculture commodities, Indonesia still runs a negative trade balance on its agriculture account, as the country continues to import large quantities of wheat, corn, soybean and sugar. Going forward, the contribution of the agriculture sector to the Indonesian economy is expected to decline as the country gradually turns towards manufacturing and the services sector.
