Indonesia's automotive sector presented a mixed, albeit gradually stabilising, picture in 2025, with the motorcycle segment the clear bright spot. Domestic motorcycle sales reached around 6.4mn units, posting modest growth of about 1% y/y and confirming the segment's structural resilience, supported by Indonesia's large population and the dominance of two-wheelers as the primary mode of transportation. Production also remained robust at nearly 7mn units, reinforcing Indonesia's position as one of the largest motorcycle markets globally and the biggest in ASEAN. In contrast, the passenger car market continued to contract, with wholesales falling to approximately 613,000 units, down 9% y/y, although the pace of decline moderated compared with previous years. Commercial vehicle sales also declined, but only marginally, slipping by around 3% to roughly 168,300 units, indicating that the sharp downturn of 2023-2024 is easing. However, exports provided a meaningful offset, with passenger car export value rising by about 8% in 2025, underlining Indonesia's growing integration into regional and global supply chains. Within ASEAN, Indonesia remains the largest automotive market and production base, particularly dominant in motorcycles and a key hub for multipurpose vehicles and light commercial vehicles.
