According to the July 2023 Electricity Market Report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), electric power consumption increased by 2.3% y/y across the world during 2022, slightly below the annual average of 2.4% observed during the pre-pandemic era of 2015-2019. This occurred as rising inflation impaired economic growth, especially that of advanced economies. However, the electric power sector continues to benefit from the electrification trend of the transport and heating sectors. In terms of generation, the rapid surge in hydrocarbons prices in international markets favoured the development of renewable power sources, as it increased the costs of thermal power generators. As a result, renewable power generation increased by 5.7% y/y in 2022, mainly driven by Asian and American countries. According to the IEA's estimates, renewable power sources are expected to increase their share of total power generation from 29% in 2022 to 35% in 2025, mainly at the expense of more polluting thermal plants, such as coal-fuelled.
