In 2022, Malaysia continued to consolidate its position as the third-largest four-wheel motor vehicle manufacturer and market in the ASEAN region, behind Thailand and Indonesia. Motorcycles and passenger vehicles were the main two segments in the Malaysian motor vehicle industry in 2022, however, passenger vehicles are the stellar product of the Malaysian automotive industry (passenger vehicle is expected to become once again the main product of the industry in terms of output and domestic sale volumes in 2023). The local automotive industry has specialised in the production and commercialisation of passenger vehicles through the performance of its two national brands (Perodua and Proton), the largest producers and sellers of passenger vehicles in the country. There is also a strong contribution of six Japanese companies (Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Mazda and Nissan), both in passenger and commercial vehicles, complemented by the participation of two German companies (BMW and Mercedes Benz). The industry struggled with the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, however, production and domestic sales strongly rebounded in 2022, posting new record highs. Concerning external trade, the Malaysian automotive industry presents relatively low levels of international competitiveness (compared to Thailand, the regional export hub) as the country has chronic trade deficits in motor vehicles and auto parts.
