There are three geographical markets in Malaysia's electric power sector: Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah (including Labuan), and Sarawak. The primary utility provider in Peninsular Malaysia is Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), while its counterparts in Sabah and Sarawak are Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), respectively. In 2024, natural gas and coal accounted for almost three-quarters of Malaysia's installed capacity but the government has revised its energy transition plans and now pursues a more ambitious target. Malaysia's emergence as a regional data centre hub is driving demand for electricity up. According to estimates, the increase in electricity demand generated by data centres alone would amount to 7.7GW by 2030. A spike in demand on this scale would come to about 38% of Peninsular Malaysia's current installed capacity.
