The Food and Beverage (F&B) industry in Malaysia, a vital contributor to the economy, was valued at MYR 34.0bn and has been growing at a fast pace, registering a growth of 18.9% y/y in 2022. The food processing industry, which accounted for 8.1% of the manufacturing sector output in 2022, accounted for 82.8% of the total F&B industry and grew 20.0% y/y, while beverages contribution was 17.2%, and it grew by 13.6% y/y. In the food industry, palm oil plays a vital role as Malaysia is the second largest exporter, contributing ~2.5% of the GDP. Due to its focus on palm oil production over the years, the country is not self-sufficient in many essential food commodities such as meat, rice, fruits and vegetables. The pandemic brought to the fore the need for food security as imports increase the vulnerability to price distortions and supply chain issues. The Malaysian government thus introduced the National Agrofood Policy 2021-2030 (NAP 2.0) and the Food Security Policy Action Plan 2021-2025 to reduce the dependency on imports for staples such as rice.
