Currently, 22% of total gross power generation in the Philippines comes from renewable energy sources, from 9.3 MW of installed capacity. According to the International Group of Liquified Natural Gas Importers, commercial depletion of the Mamplaya gas field is expected in 2027, prompting increased liquified natural gas imports. By drilling new wells in June 2025, the gas field may continue to be used as a fuel source until 2034, raising natural gas production between 1.5 GW and 1.7 GW. Renewable energy goals set by the National Renewable Energy Programme and the Philippines Energy Plan provide for renewable energies to comprise 35% of the generation mix by 2030 and 50%, by 2040. The technologies that are to lead this energy transition already have set costs of energy (LCOE) generation lower than that of combined-cycle gas turbines, according to the Climatescope 2024 report. Solar and wind power projects are solicited and incentivised by the government through 20-year electricity supply contracts, tax holidays, waived import tariffs and an assured market for electricity from renewable energy.
