Poland is a major producer and exporter of agricultural products in the EU. The agribusiness industry accounted for 2.8% of the country's GDP in 2022. Sectoral exports registered an annual expansion of 19.9% in 2022, to a new record high of USD 23.7bn. The industry also reported a new record high trade surplus of USD 6.6bn following an annual increase of 29.2%. Sectoral imports also grew in 2022, by 16.7% y/y to USD 17.2bn. During the year the Polish economy struggled with high inflation, which negatively affected domestic consumption, and therefore the agribusiness industry relied more on demand for its products from foreign markets. To counter these negative effects, in February 2022 the Polish government reduced VAT on food products to stimulate domestic sales.
