The Polish banking sector is characterised by its high stability and safety. It is also one of the most developed in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). At the end of 2022, the banking sector's assets were worth 88.8% of GDP, which was below the 92.7% average from the previous five years. Assets grew by 6.2% y/y to PLN 2.7tn, decreasing from 9.5% y/y growth in 2021 due to a deceleration in lending. Total receivables rose by 4.4% y/y to PLN 1.6tn, which is mainly explained by a rise in the loans of non-financial corporations (NFCs). Deposits continued on a positive trend, increasing by 5.6% y/y to PLN 2tn due to a decline in consumer spending and the postponement of investments by NFCs. The banking system has remained well-capitalised and liquid. The total capital adequacy ratio rose to 20.1% in 2022 and the impaired loans ratio improved from 5.8% in 2021 to 5.5% in 2022, which can be explained by the government's measures to aid borrowers.
