The Polish banking sector, while still relatively small compared to the overall economy, remains stable and dynamically developing, and is the leader in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in terms of asset size. At the end of 2023, the banking sector's assets were worth 88.6% of GDP, which was below the previous year's value. Assets grew, however, by 10.1% y/y to reach PLN 3.01tn, accelerating in comparison with the single digit growth of previous years. Deposits continued to be the primary source of liquidity for banks in 2023, with a 9.5% y/y increase. This was due to higher interest rates encouraging borrowers to deposit their savings in bank accounts. The structure of deposits supports this trend, with term deposit values increasing by 17.6% y/y compared to a 9.2% y/y increase in current deposit values. With increased profitability and cost efficiency, the sector remains liquid and well-capitalised. In 2023, the CET1 capital ratio rose to 20%, from 18% in the previous year, significantly exceeding the Basel Committee's mandated 8% total capital ratio, indicating a very safe level. On top of that, the credit quality of banking assets remained stable throughout 2023 and a decline in impairment ratios, particularly among household borrowers, was observed.
