With PLN 196.9bn of assets and PLN 72.4bn of premiums in 2022, the Polish insurance market is the largest in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). However, it remains far less saturated than in Western European countries; the penetration rate is 2.2%, ranking Poland 53rd in the world, according to Swiss Re. In 2022 premiums rose by 4.5% y/y following a 9.1% y/y increase in 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic. The growth was due to non-life insurance premiums, which increased by 7.9% y/y to PLN 50.8bn. In life insurance the consequences of bad reputation of unit-linked products and increased competition continued to drive premiums down, decreasing by 2.6% y/y to PLN 21.5bn in 2022.
