With PLN 218.1bn of assets and PLN 78.9bn of premiums in 2023, the Polish insurance market is the largest in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). However, it remains far less saturated than in Western European countries. According to estimates by the Swiss global insurance provider, Swiss Re, Poland ended 2023 ranking 46th in terms of insurance penetration, with a rate of 2.2%, which is relatively low even compared to some regional peers such as Czech Republic, at 2.9%. In 2023, premiums rose by 9% y/y, which is explained by an increase in both life and non-life segments. The life insurance premiums written rose by 6.1% y/y to PLN 22.8bn. However, the segment continued to be affected by the consequences of the bad reputation of unit-linked products. In non-life insurance, the value of gross written premiums (GWP) increased by 10.3% y/y to PLN 56bn, with motor insurance being the most significant line.
