Poland is making rapid progress transforming its energy sector, with its coal-generated energy decreasing in 2023 by 10pp, to 63%. While this corresponds to a 3pp increase in the share of gas as a transition source, wind and solar energy remained the largest contributors. With that, the share of coal in energy generation is expected to decrease to just 9% by 2040, according to the Instrat Foundation. This clearly shows the declining importance of coal in the local energy system, despite its historical importance, both nationally and within the Silesia region where most mines are located.
