The agribusiness sector plays an important role in Thailand's economy, accounting for 8.7% of the country's GDP and 9.9% of total exports in 2024. Moreover, the sector employed 28.9% of the country's total workforce in 2024, being the largest employer at the industry level. Access to a relatively large and cheap workforce has allowed Thailand to become one of the largest global producers of rice, sugarcane, palm oil, cassava, rubber, durian (a tropical fruit) and poultry meat. However, there is the strong presence of small- and medium-sized farming businesses with limited access to technology and financial assistance. Therefore, the agribusiness industry (especially the crop segment) shows vulnerability to the negative effects of recurrent adverse weather conditions (mainly droughts and water scarcity, as well as floods and excessive rainfalls). In line with this, the droughts registered in the 2023/2024 agricultural season weakened the performance of the agribusiness industry, affecting the performance of sugarcane, cassava, durian, palm oil and rice. Despite these challenges, the Thai agribusiness industry has been able to develop relatively high levels of productivity and international competitiveness, resulting in recurrent trade surpluses. At the segment level, crops and livestock products are the main contributors to the trade surplus, while the fisheries segment has a large trade deficit.
