Thailand's finance and insurance sector generates nearly 9% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and employs some 470,000 people. In 2024, the sector remained on a solid footing thanks to strong capital buffers, ample liquidity coverage, and conservative risk management through high provisioning. The sector is well equipped to handle any adverse shocks, as the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) stood at 20.4% at the end of 2024 and the liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) at 206.4%, sufficiently higher than the regulatory requirements. Thai lenders managed to significantly improve their profitability in 2024 despite the fact that weaker-than-expected economic growth weighed on lending that contracted for the first time since the global financial crisis in 2008. There was an increase in special mention loans (SMLs) in 2024, an indication of underlying weakness, especially among households with high leverage and SMEs. Along with the restructuring exercise that has been ongoing since the pandemic, a broad-based economic revival will play an important role in reducing the overhang of high leverage in the system, particularly among vulnerable households and SMEs, as it will aid credit creation and profitable growth for the banking sector.
