At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November 2021, Thailand announced its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The Power Development Plan 2018, Revision 1 (PDP2018, Revision 1), which was updated in October 2020, outlined the goals and policies for the inclusion of renewable energy sources in the energy mix of the country. According to its national energy policy, Thailand expects demand for electricity to reach 277,302 GWh by 2027 and 367,458 GWh, by 2037. Increasing demand for power by the nation and the goal to achieve carbon neutrality prompted the government to embark on a dynamic plan that would reduce Thailand's dependence on fossil fuels, while increasing the contribution of renewable energy to half of the current generation. As renewables take a more important role in the energy mix, natural gas would be replaced as a primary power source.
