Thailand's agribusiness and food & beverage sectors accounted for 8.7% and 6%, respectively, of the GDP, rising by 2.25% y/y and 2.18%, respectively, in 2021, as both sectors showed the first signs of recovery after the negative effects of COVID-19 pandemic and adverse weather conditions (severe drought and water scarcity). In 2022, the two industries continued to grow as agribusiness GVA expanded for the second consecutive year (+2.4% y/y), while the value-added production index of food products rose by 2.2% y/y, while those of beverage products rose by 1.5% y/y. Thailand is among the world's leading producers and exporters of agricultural commodities including rice, sugar, poultry meat and seafood. The export value of agribusiness and food and beverage products accounted for 6.2% and 8.8% of Thai total exports in 2022. Moreover, the food and beverage and agribusiness industries reported new record highs in 2022, pushed up by a recovering foreign demand after the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The good performance of the Thai food and beverage sector attracted the interest of foreign investors as the industry represented 6.4% of Thai FDI inflow in 2022, reaching a new record high of USD 4.3bn.
